2017 Curing & Caring for Childhood Cancer

April 17th, 2017 – Newport Beach, California – Northwestern Mutual is excited to announce their partnership with Alex’s Lemonade Stand and the Jesse Reese Foundation (NEGU). For every $25 through Northwestern Mutual, $20 supply’s one JoyJar® and the additional $5 goes towards Alex’s Lemonade Stand.

The Jessie Rees Foundation was, and always will be, inspired by one courageous and compassionate 12-year-old little girl.  Her name, Jessica Joy Rees, better known as “Jessie”.   Jessie was a faith-filled, beautiful, athletic, caring and loving twelve-year-old girl who courageously fought two brain tumors (DIPG) from March 3, 2011 to January 5, 2012. Jessie created her fun-filled JoyJars® to send hope and joy to her peers fighting cancer.  Jessie knew that fighting cancer made you feel lonely and limited.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand’s mission is to raise money and awareness of childhood cancer causes, primarily for research into new treatments and cures, and to encourage and empower others, especially children, to get involved and make a difference for children with cancer.

“I’m excited to announce that Northwestern Mutual Orange County is kicking-off this special partnership by stuffing and delivering 500 JoyJars all over the world to childeren in need of joy, hope, and care! The Jessie Reese foundation is changing the lives of thousands of children every year by encouraging them to never ever give up.Partnering with these amazing organizations is a true honor.” said Timothy Mulroy, managing partner of Northwestern Mutual Orange County.

kaboom build day, northwestern mutual orange county, nm orange countyAt approximately 8:35 A.M., 180 volunteers from the local community, gathered in front of what would become their new play space. Volunteers were welcomed by some very special speakers: Tim Mulroy, Managing Partner at Northwestern Mutual Orange County, and Alice Loya, Administrative Manager with the City of Fullerton. They reinforced the importance of play and got everyone excited for the day.  After reviewing safety and logistics, Team Leaders were introduced, and everyone broke into their groups.

With the help of a professional playground installer, volunteers installed an Ozark Summit Climber, Arch Swings, a Glide Slide, a Playtown Music Store, Beanstalk Climber, and more!  Volunteers also worked on Butcher Block Benches, Child Picnic Tables, PVC Soccer Goals, and more!

Highlights of the day included:

  • Having double the typical amount of mulch and still finishing the build early!
  • Tim Mulroy singing “Do You Want to Build a Playground?” at Ribbon Cutting, much to the crowd’s delight.
  • Mayor Fitzgerald expressing enthusiasm about partnering with KaBOOM! in the future!

As the day came to a close, all of the volunteers came together to clean up the site in preparation for the ribbon cutting ceremony at 2:20pm. Tim Mulroy of Northwestern Mutual and Fullerton Mayor Jennifer Fitzgerald shared closing remarks. They thanked the volunteers for all their hard work!

Thank You!
